Engineered bamboo floors like all engineered hardwoods do use trace amounts of urea formaldehyde during manufacturing but it is generally in very low safe quantities. Formaldehyde is normally present at low levels usually less than 0 03 parts per million ppm in both outdoor and indoor air.

Composite wood flooring products like engineered hardwood bamboo and laminate are made by fusing wood layers together with glues and resins. Premium bamboo flooring contains virtually no formaldehyde at levels below 05 ppm. At ambient bamboo flooring our solid strand woven bamboo floors use only phenol formaldehyde resins which typically do not result in emissions considered hazardous. Not necessarily because the amount of formaldehyde in the laminate flooring if present can vary due to how the flooring is made.

Cheaper or unconcerned bamboo flooring suppliers can have formaldehyde emissions between 2 ppm and 3 ppm parts per million. Formaldehyde is an ever present colorless gas that can give off a pickle like smell. This is a known carcinogen and a serious air pollutant. But these glues are often made with formaldehyde a known human carcinogen and serious home air pollutant.

Despite formaldehyde being classed as a v o c volatile organic compound it is only dangerous when found in high levels. Most bamboo flooring is manufactured with adhesives that contain a phenol formaldehyde resin.
