In the skull base there are numerous foramina that transmit cranial nerves blood vessels and other structures these are collectively referred to as the cranial foramina.

Foramen of the floor skull.

Foramen caecum or cecum. It allows the passage of an emissary vein that comes from the nasal cavity and drains into the superior sagittal sinus part of the venous drainage system associated with the brain. In this article we shall look at some of the major cranial foramina and the structures that pass through them. To help us remember complex sets of information we can use a helpful mnemonic phrase.

These condyles form joints with the first cervical vertebra and thus support the skull on top of the vertebral. Foramina is an opening that allows the passage of structures from one region to another. As we are concerned with the foramena of skull there are many foramen in skull but here we would mention some of the important one. It lies in the frontal bone just anterior to the ethmoid bone.

Especially all the many holes or foramina of the skull. Foramena of skull are opening in the skeleton of human skull through which various structures passes. Image of base of the skull with several of the foramina labeled the human skull has numerous openings foramina through which cranial nerves arteries veins and other structures pass. On the base of the skull the occipital bone contains the large opening of the foramen magnum which allows for passage of the spinal cord as it exits the skull.

A foramen allows a structure to pass through so things like blood vessels and nerves. These foramina vary in size and number with age. A brief survey of the foramina of the cranial floor in the human skull including a mnemonic phrase to easily remember their names and anatomical positions. Is the most anterior of the holes in the floor of the skull.

Figure 13 4 label the bones and features of the floor of the cranial cavity. In the skull they re really important to know because many important blood vessels pass through these foramina to supply the brain and several important nerves pass through them to carry information to and from the brain. Figure 13 2 label the lateral bones and features of the skull. On either side of the foramen magnum is an oval shaped occipital condyle.

Carotid canal foramen lacerum. These structures include arteries veins nerves muscles etc. Figure 13 2 label the lateral bones and features of the skull. Openings through the skull in the floor of the middle fossa include the optic canal and superior orbital fissure which open into the posterior orbit the foramen rotundum foramen ovale and foramen spinosum and the exit of the carotid canal with its underlying foramen lacerum.
